The story behind Mistwood Clay Atelier

Founded in 2013 in the coastal forests of Northern California, we bring quiet Scandinavian design principles to the practice of clay.

Our story

Mistwood Clay Atelier began when founder Elin Voss returned from a decade living and studying in Denmark and Sweden. She wanted to share the deliberate, respectful approach to ceramics she had learned with others seeking a slower, more intentional practice.

What started as a small studio with four wheels has grown into a dedicated school and materials atelier serving more than 1,200 students each year. Our buildings sit on five acres of second-growth forest, chosen for their stillness and natural light.

Our mission

We exist to teach precise, respectful, and sustainable clay work that respects both material and maker. Every student leaves with improved technique, deeper material understanding, and a community that continues beyond the studio.

Slow craft
We reject rushed production in favor of intentional, repeatable processes.
Material honesty
Students learn to celebrate the true character of clay, never forcing it into unnatural forms.
Safety first
Every class begins with proper ventilation, tool handling, and studio hygiene standards.

Our teaching approach

Foundational wheel throwing

Fourteen weeks to develop consistent centering, wall thickness, and control.

Handbuilding & slab work

From pinch pots to complex vessels using templates and pacing techniques.

Glaze chemistry & firing

Understanding materials inside the kiln so you can achieve repeatable results.

Class structure

  • 01 Demonstration and theory (45 min)
  • 02 Guided practice with individual feedback (2 hrs)
  • 03 Material science discussion and clean-up (30 min)
